Digging Through The Archives: Burton Team Favorites

You know who loves digging through the archives just as much as we do? Our Burton team riders. So, we recently gave them the opportunity to dig deep into said archives themselves — meaning they got the chance to put their hands on literally everything and anything they wanted. What they dug up ranged from baggy ‘90s outerwear and AG classic from the ‘00s, to sentimental first boards and even a mixtape. Let’s take a look at what they pulled out.

Grace Warner

1996 Bio Lite Jacket

Oozing with classic style, our 1996 Bio Lite Jacket that Grace Warner dug up is much like her: timeless. Featuring a simple two-tone colorway with a mock collar, this piece of bygone outerwear probably wouldn’t look too out of place on the Midwest hill and streets that Grace calls home today.

Kelly Clark

1993 Kids Burton Air

As soon as we invited her to the archives, Kelly Clark knew exactly what she needed to dig up: her very first snowboard. A Christmas gift when she was just a youngin’, one could argue that this 1993 Kids Burton Air might have been the most impactful gift Kelly ever received. She is the winningest snowboarder ever, after all.

Knowbuddy Boards

Having grown up looking up to the Knowbuddy riders, it was no surprise that Luke took the opportunity to scour through all of these illusive boards. Capturing Burton’s core roots, while aiming to bolster young and upcoming riders, the Knowbuddy program was a highly influential era in our history. As an aspiring Knowbuddy rider, Luke forever knows his roots.

2001 Burton Moto Jersey (Pipe Collection)

The early ‘00s were a significant time in not just snowboard history, but action sports on a larger scale. X Games was captivating audiences, and alternative sports like snowboarding and motocross were tapping into the mainstream psyche. One of our favorite pieces from this era (and Luke’s, too) was our Moto Jersey. Part of our Pipe Collection, it borrowed styling from our moto-riding counterparts and brought it to the snow.

2002 AG Q Jacket

Continuing with the early ‘00s theme, Luke immediately brought his attention to this vintage, military-inspired AG piece from 2002. The Q Jacket, with its olive drab colorway and concealable surplus-style pockets, quickly became a team favorite back in the day. With subliminal accents and hidden features throughout, the Q Jacket helped solidify AG’s iconic style.

2000 [ak] Jacket

Prior to the turn of the millennium, [ak] Jackets were simply add-ons to the existing Burton line. But 2000 marked the first season that [ak] became its own distinct collection — and this jacket set the tone. Featuring timeless styling with all the tech to withstand decades of abuse, we weren’t surprised when Luke reached for this coat. It’s a classic, just like his riding style.

Going through the archives with TK is the best. I love seeing the gear all the riders I looked up to used to wear and TK educating me on it is the sickest. I’m very inspired by the style and fits in the archive so anytime I get to go through it I love reimagining it in my mind of what it could look like today. The archive is where all the gold is. I love digging through and finding all the nuggets.

Maria Thomsen

2005 Ronin 2L Vent Pant & Jacket

Like many of us (ourselves included) we can’t ever forget this staple from 2005 — and neither could Maria Thomsen. A matching plaid top and bottom, this iconic 2L Ronin set was a hot commodity in the mid-00s. And honestly, we feel like Maria could be just the person to rock it 20 years later.

2008 Ronin Stroll Down Jacket

Clearly drawn to the memorable Ronin pieces of the mid-00s, Maria’s next pick was this iconic Stroll Down Jacket. Featuring a patchwork, argyle-inspired design, this baggy puffy also had one additional feature up its sleeves: a set of dice. Despite her calculated approach on a snowboard, it seems Maria appreciates a bit of a gamble every now and again too.

Mikey Rencz

2000 Burton Se7en Boards

In 2000, we unveiled the now-legendary Se7en board, and Mikey Rencz couldn’t resist pulling out the entire series from the archive. Much like his own freestyle-spirit, the twin-tipped, park and jump-destroying Se7en still holds a special place in the Burton history books. For years on end, it was a staple of the Burton Team — just like Mikey.

Ylfa Runarsdottir

2014 Juice Wagon

Featuring art by Scott Lenhart — a legendary snowboard artist who has designed countless graphics for us over the years — the 2014 Juice Wagon immediately caught Ylfa’s eye thanks in part to its little creature graphic featured on the base. A board that was designed to tackle the gnarliest obstacles, or just enjoy a casual day on the hill, it seemed to fit Ylfa’s tastes on multiple levels.

2002 AG K1 Pants

If you follow Ylfa at all, you know she’s got a style all her own. You could certainly say the same about these AG K1 Pants from back in 2002. Inspired by the shorts you see in the boxing ring, these pants had a number of other unexpected features as well. The highlight? A mini CD dialed in with an AG team mixtape.

2008 Dutchess Insulated Jacket

With its bright yellow plaid capped off with a fur-lined collar, the Dutchess Insulated Jacket was a hit in 2008 — and a hit with Ylfa today. Warm and waterproof with streetwear-inspired contours and accents, the Dutchess was a staple in our commitment to blending on-hill performance with lifestyle vibes.

Zeb Powell

2009 Se7en Wide

One of our most sought after graphics over the years, the equally flashy and tasteful Zeb Powell couldn’t help but go straight for this 2009 Se7en. But what makes this particular deck even special is the bit of personalization on it. Todd Kohlman, Burton’s Archivist, vividly remembers watching Trevor Andrew autograph the topsheet at the Burton Vermont store back in ‘09. Now, the real question is, do you think Trevor remembers misspelling it?

2000 Custom

Yet another relic from the turn of the millennium, this 2000 Custom was nothing shy of a classic. Fresh off an overhaul by Burton team riders such as the legendary Dave Downing, this update of the Custom paved the way for quiver future killers everywhere. With its freestyle focus and freeride capabilities, the Custom has continued to be one of the most-reputable boards in our line for decades. No shock why Zeb was drawn to it.

Picking through the archives is always one of our favorite pastimes. And getting the chance to share that excitement with our own Burton Team Riders only makes it more fulfilling. From reminiscing on first boards and dream boards, to history lessons on mixtapes and 2000s tech, the archives never fail to impress and inform.
