Meet the New Limited Edition Family Tree Boards for 2025

by Tyler Macleod

Welcome to the family — the Family Tree collection, that is

Every winter, we anxiously anticipate the unveiling of our limited edition Family Tree boards.

2025 wasn’t any different. And to cap off our most versatile Burton Family Tree line to date, we enlisted the abstract work of artist Ryan Crotty to fully revamp the aesthetics. Featuring black-and-white mountainscape-inspired graphics on top, with complementing saturated colors on the base, this season’s collection literally glows with meditative calm beneath your feet — while capturing the all-mountain purity these boards have long been synonymous with.

Let’s dig into ‘em…

All-mountain magic in a surf-inspired shape

Few people have done more for snowboarding and the action sports community as a whole than our dear friend Salema Masekela. A snowboarder, surfer, skateboarder, TV personality, actor, singer, mentor; the list goes on and on for him. So, who better to have a board with their name on it?

Developed around a new directional shape, and featuring our popular Directional Camber profile, this surf-inspired design offers an all-mountain vibe that riders of all styles and ability levels can appreciate. Plus, thanks to a large sizing range that caters to riders of all sizes and preferences, the Alekesam truly is a board for the people. Much like the man himself.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Camber

As smooth and buttery as it gets

We dug deep into our bag of tricks to develop the deep-condition-seeking Burton 3D Channel Surfer Flat Top for Winter ‘25. The result of hours, days, and even months of extensive on-snow testing with our team riders and design team, this all-new Family Tree offering bridges surf-influenced freedom with on-mountain precision and performance. Featuring a 3D shape that instills a catch-free and buttery personality, along with a directional, swallow tail outline that guarantees effortless float on the deepest of days, the line-blurring 3D Channel Surfer Flat Top proves to be a much more versatile ride than its exterior may initially suggest. So, for expert riders looking to carve deep turns, cruise fresh groomers, and approach the entire mountain like one endless wave, this is one deck you’ll be eager to add to your own family of rigs.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Flat Top
  • Shape: Directional

A nimble yet stable ride for chasing stashes

Yet another board taking the field this season is our Family Tree Short Stop. Far from your typical rookie at this point, the Short Stop instead performs much more like a seasoned pro — providing a quick and maneuverable ride built for surfy days across the entire mountain. Snappy and agile, this newcomer has the agility to weave through tight trees, blast through gladed terrain, and is equipped to stay afloat when seeking out those hidden, untracked stashes. Built around our Directional Flat Top Bend — which features a flat overall profile with a rocker nose — and a unique swallow tail outline, the Short Stop performs well above its class in deep conditions, while also providing the stability necessary when laying a carve or riding it out of sporty terrain.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Flat Top
  • Shape: Directional
  • Terrain: All Mountain / Powder
  • Riding Level: Intermediate

Rowdy lines, steep terrain, and high-speed arcs

The chances of getting to ride Natural Selection are pretty slim (for most of us, at least). However, the chances of getting to ride a board worthy of Natural Selection just became a heck of a lot more realistic thanks to the High Fidelity. Directly inspired by the Natural Selection Tour, the new Family Tree High Fidelity is a deck fine-tuned for big mountain lines and backcountry freestyle — and of course everything else in between. Designed in collaboration with our Burton Team Riders, this board prioritizes everything you’d need to compete on one of snowboarding’s biggest stages: speed, precision, control, and reliability. Featuring a Freeride Directional shape and 7mm of taper, the High Fidelity is just as comfortable in the air as it is slicing through fresh lines. Whether that’s at Natty Select or your home resort.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Camber
  • Shape: Freeride Directional
  • Terrain: All Mountain
  • Riding Level: Expert

Blast and dodge it all on this quiver-of-one

We’d be remiss not to mention this staple (once again) of our Family Tree Collection. Designed to meet the daily demands in our home state of Vermont, the Hometown Hero was appropriately named as such. From poking around New England’s tight trees, to maintaining a grip through icy lines, this daily driver continues to be a fan favorite as well as our own. If you’re having a tough time deciding what board to add to your quiver — Family Tree or otherwise — you just can’t go wrong with the Hometown Hero.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Camber
  • Shape: Freeride Directional
  • Terrain: All Mountain
  • Riding Level: Intermediate / Expert

From kid laps to charging, just like Grilo

Built in tribute to Marko “Grilo” Grilc’s desire to merge his love of family and his love of snowboarding, we were humbled to see how far spreading in popularity our Gril Master became last season. Still maintaining its status as a true dad board that’s as ready to take mellow “kid” laps as it is capable of charging technical lines, the Gril Master has proven itself time and time again as a well-rounded, go-anywhere board worthy of the Grilo namesake.

Grilo forever.

Key Tech:

  • Bend: Directional Camber
  • Shape: Freeride Directional
  • Terrain: All Mountain
  • Riding Level: Intermediate / Expert
