Burton Grails: Bags That Pack A Punch And Pack It All
by
Snowboarders have always carried a lot of baggage. Luckily, just the good kind — board bags through airports, backpacks filled with extra layers, and, obviously, coolers topped with frothy, celebratory beverages.
Since the very beginning — when Jake designed the first board bag back in 1977 — Burton has prioritized lightening the load for all of our knuckle-dragging journeys and beyond. From lugging our setups, to carrying music collections, to cold beers, and even our other recreational essentials, our bags have made life on-the-go a little less cumbersome. And a lot more fun.
Let’s kick things off with the bag that started it all: Jake’s first board bag, circa 1977...
Board Bag — 1977

The next time you’re packing up for a snowboard trip, or rolling your setup through the airport with ease, remember who you have to thank for it: Jake. An essential for any boarder on the go, a quality board bag might be the best investment anyone can make aside from the snowboard itself.
Simple yet effective, Jake’s first bags were only a glimpse of things to come. With just a main zipper compartment and two handles to lug it around, the bag did exactly what it was intended to do: carry snowboards.
Today, Burton is one of the premiere manufacturers of the most reliable board bags on the market. With rolling options, multiple board capacities, and plenty of additional access points for all your gear and more, winter travel can’t get much easier. And we all have this 1977 innovation to thank for it. Thanks, Jake.
DJ Bag — 2006

Advertised as a mix master’s delight, 2006’s DJ Bag combined every day use with audiophile tendencies. From vinyl to digital, school to the club, it truly existed on another wavelength across multiple generations.
With the capacity to carry 80 vinyl records, while simultaneously plugging into an iPod with its integrated dock station, the DJ Bag catered to all types of music aficionados across various mediums. Plus, with its compression-molded headphone storage, removable CD sleeve, and oversized padded laptop compartment, everything and anything was along for the ride — safe and sound.
While the iPod hasn’t quite made its nostalgic comeback into pop culture (it’s gotta be coming, right?), it’s certain a few of us would put the DJ Bag to use today for all our vintage shop and record store visits.
420 Kit — 2007

A quick fan-favorite upon its 2007 release, our 420 Kit was the perfect pocket organizer for the most precious of cargo. Inconspicuous, and small enough to stow away in a jacket, pants pocket, or backpack, this trusty little companion was an essential item for the mountain, house parties, or that three-day reggae festival that rolled into town every April.
A sturdy exterior kept anything from being crushed to dust, a zippered interior pouch kept your remedies safe and easily accessible, and the included poker tool came in handy when needing to clean out any devices that might have gotten clogged…for whatever reason.
Burton bags have always prioritized keeping our most prized possessions safe, sound, and away from wandering eyes, and the 420 Kit was no exception.
Mess Pack — 2008

How do you make a classic, reliable messenger bag even better (and cooler)? Put a binding buckle on its shoulder. That’s precisely what we did for 2008’s Mess Pack — a well-designed messenger bag with snowboard styling and functionality.
Thanks to the binding ratchet closure on its Super Cush Courier Strap, this bag not only reminded you of snowboarding when commuting to work and school, but it also let everyone around you know you were a snowboarder, too. And what better way to make friends worth having?
Internally, the Mess Pack featured an ample 14L capacity with a dedicated, padded computer sleeve that fit up to a 17” laptop. Topped off with a plethora of organizer pockets, and a sunglass/media pouch, this bag exuded professionalism, even when pedaling around cars and people on your daily commute.
Beeracuda — 2013

Yep, a wearable cooler for your favorite beverage. Who knew a six-pack could be so fashionable?
A 2L cooler bag that fits five 12oz cans — along with the sixth in the attached koozie — the Beeracuda was introduced in 2013 and has been a staple to our bag collection ever since. Whether you ride with it, float the river with it, or sneak into that three-day reggae festival (with your complementary 420 Kit, of course), the Beeracuda was designed for whenever you need cold beverages on the go.
Cheers to that.
Warren Jacket — 2015

A jacket? A backpack? Why not both? That’s exactly what 2015’s Warren Jacket was. Or was it a backpack? Whatever.
Regardless of how we ended up classifying it for the catalog’s sake, the Warren was a utilitarian masterpiece. You know those warm, slushy days ripe for a few cold beverages? Use it as a backpack. Oh, suddenly the weather is colder than said bevies? Flip it into a jacket.
But don’t think we skimped on any technical features just to check multiple boxes. Constructed around a DRYRIDE Durashell 2-Layer Membrane with additional protection coming from its welded detailing, water-resistant zippers, and fully-taped seams, the Warren was a reliable defense against any weather — whether you were wearing it as a jacket, a backpack, or any other way that maybe we didn’t think of and you did.
MINE77 X Steamline Trunk — 2020

A prized possession of Jake’s, the specific steamer trunk you’re looking at right here probably logged more travel miles on it than your friend’s old Toyota Camry. As the personal luggage of choice for Jake, it was a no-brainer to include it in 2020’s MINE77 Collection as soon as he mentioned it.
“Our travel bags are dialed and have been for decades. So, it was a bit of a surprise to the crew when I came to them with this Steamline Trunk.”
Discovering it while traveling through Europe, Jake was immediately hooked on the design. Of course, he knew he had to customize it. By increasing the size, upgrading to skate wheels, swapping the buckles for binding ratchets, and developing a mountain print for its interior, the actual MINE77 Steamline Trunk was born. All thanks to the relic you see right here.
Whoever said carrying a lot of baggage had to be a bad thing?
At Burton, we honestly couldn’t carry enough of ‘em. It’s why, today, all our bags come backed with an industry-leading lifetime warranty. Whether it’s your brand new board, a sixer of your favorite beverages, or that dusty old record collection that your great aunt passed down to you, Jake and the team at Burton have dedicated decades to ensuring you have the best bag available to bring everything along for the ride.
